What do you do at Waylay?

My role at the company has evolved tremendously over the course of the last two years. I was initially hired as a Node.js / JavaScript engineer but have since touched on every part of our software stack – ranging from infrastructure and monitoring to distributed software to building front-end dashboards in React.

My entire career so far consists exclusively of working for startups, so I’m quite used to wearing many different hats. It’s challenging, but exciting and immensely rewarding.

If you don’t want to be defined by any single job title and are confident in your abilities to do more – Waylay gives you the breathing room to do so, in stark contrast to many other employers.

What’s an exciting thing you’re working on right now?

I’m always involved in multiple projects, so it’s hard to pick a single one 😉

I recently had the opportunity to work on a distributed software component allowing me to learn about consistent hash rings, gossip protocols and distributed locks – fun stuff!

What are the qualities that you appreciate most in colleagues?

Curiosity, problem solving skills and striving to build high quality software.

At Waylay we often use bleeding-edge technology so we are always looking for engineers who are willing to learn new things and can apply their problem solving skills to overcome interesting challenges.

Building great software is strongly embedded in Waylay’s DNA – discussing software architecture and reviewing pull requests are daily occurrences.

What is one thing that you believe would make someone not a good fit for Waylay?

Someone who isn’t willing to be flexible or step outside of their comfort zone will have a hard time fitting in.

The roadmap changes often, requirements are often updated and you will likely interact with multiple parts of the stack.

We have also developed a strong devops culture – so we expect everyone to pull their weight when it comes to deploying their software.

What are some of your passions outside of work?

In my spare time I often contribute to open-source software on GitHub, play board games like Dungeons & Dragons, Arcadia Quest and tons of others.

Aside from that I also read comic books, graphic novels, manga and very occasionally brew a homebrew 🍺.
